Thelma van Rensburg


Thelma was born in Pretoria, South-Africa in 1969. She has studied and traveled extensively in her home country and abroad. She always had an interest in art but only pursued it as a career in 2004. She enrolled for a BTech Fine Art degree at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria and received her Btech Degree in 2007, majoring in painting and printmaking. Since 2008 Thelma’s focus is predominantly on the female form and the masks women use as an extension of their identity. She explores the masquerade, as an extension and fundamental phenomena of identity.
Her main means of art making are digital collages manipulated with Photoshop. Sometimes these images evolve into sculptures or paintings. The artists that inspire her are the digital artist- Ray Caesar, the photographer- Cindy Sherman and the pop artist- Madonna.
